Big, mature, healthy bear (easily 300 lbs +). It stopped in middle of road when it saw me and waited about 90 seconds and then continued at a slow pace up the hillside between homes.
  • 5/16/13 - Several untagged bears are active in the community. Unfortunately, they are gaining access to trash from unlocked dumpsters and unsecured cans. Bear resistant cans and dumpsters must be closed properly by the user to function.

  • 10/6/12 - My husband and I saw med-large size black bear here in South Lake Tahoe walking between hotels on Manzanita and La Salle St. just off Park last night about 10pm.   We were on our way walking to the Casinos when my husband spotted the bear, put his arm around, turned me around slow and said "Kris do not freak out and do not run.  There is a big bear over there.  We are going to walk real calm and slow back to the room."  Once we were a distance away, my husband told me to glance back so I could see the bear. Just as I was turning the corner of the building, I did.  My goodness that bear was big and had huge legs.  He was walking real calm but did have his head turned toward us.  I called 911 to let them know, and they were not worried.  Just told me to ignore the bear and keep walking.  Wow. He was about a block or less from us.  Very startling.  It looked like he was probably coming from the garbage bins at Blue Lake Inn and headed to the one here at 3 Peaks Resort.  So glad nothing terrible happened, the bear made it safe through town and didn't hurt anyone.  I do think there should be a little more warning and education for tourists.  It was seriously one of the scariest moments of my life and had my husband not handled it the way he did, I would have just ran on instinct.
  • 9/30/12 - At about 11:00 a.m., we encountered a mama and baby bear on the fairway of hole 5 at Brockway Golf Course.  They came out of the woods about 25 feet from us and walked across the fairway.  We stayed calm and slowly walked in the opposite direction until mama and baby made their way to the other side of the fairway and disappeared into the woods.

  • 3/13/12 - Dale Drive. Early AM bear broke into storage area beneath house. Ate canned milk, dry pasta, etc.
  • 3/13/2012 - Knotty Pine Drive. I think a bear opened the unlocked doors of our SUV last night and crawled inside it looking for food.  The doors were open, the upholstery ripped and dirty, and there were tooth marks on a small plastic bottle.  The GPS and iPod inside were left in tact.  I suppose it could have been a raccoon, but I'd be surprised if a raccoon were tall enough and strong enough to open the doors.

Yep. Smoky the bear was here, and looking rather healthy. Picture available if needed.
