Waste Not Biomass Recycling
Free biomass recycling is offered to Incline Village residents seasonally. Our biomass programs include Pine Needle and Christmas Tree recycling. The collected material is used for basin-wide erosion control projects, and greatly reduces the amount of materials transported to the landfill. Additionally, the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District offers free, on-site chipping from May through October.

Protect your property and Lake Tahoe:
• Rake off roofs, driveways and turf areas
• Leave 1-2 inches of decaying needles over bare soil
The decaying pine needle “duff” layer is important to leave intact for the health of the soil
About Pine Needle Recycling:
WASTE NOT offers free pine needle recycling to residents and businesses of Incline Village and Crystal Bay, Nevada. The program is sponsored by Incline Village GID--Public Works & Utilities, Diamond Peak Ski Resort and Waste Management.
The purpose of the program includes: to facilitate the defensible space effort; provide a viable, economical, and ecologically beneficial erosion control material to internal and external customers; and reduce landfill volume to improve the Incline Village recycling rate. Over the past five years, we reused over 4175 tons of pine needles. The needles are used in erosion control programs including projects in Squaw Valley, Cave Rock, Incline Village, Tahoma, and Mt. Rose areas.
Why are needles better than straw?
• The needles are native to the Tahoe Basin ecosystem.
• Needles do not carry non-native seeds from noxious weeds that often kill Tahoe's indigenous plants.
• The needles weigh more than straw and also intertwine resulting in greater stability, greater erosion control, and greater moisture retention in the soil.
• Pine needles do not readily float out of the beds as does the straw.
• The pine needles allow for easy penetration of water, air, and fertilizer whereas the straw clippings may remain excessively wet causing mold to grow and possibly damaging growing plants underneath.
• There is a supply of needles coming from the community, and instead of wasting this valuable product we are re-using it in local erosion control projects!

Christmas Tree Recycling
Christmas tree recycling is offered every year between December 24, 2007 and February 4, 2008. Drop off your tree seven days a week at the Preston Field parking lot in Incline Village.
Our Christmas Tree Recycling service helps save our natural resources, landfill space, and protects the clarity of Lake Tahoe. All trees dropped off at Preston Field will be chipped and used as mulch for local erosion control projects.
All trees left curbside will be taken to the landfill. Last year we recycled 1800 trees, please help us set a new record this year! Recycle!
Please remove all ornaments, tinsel, nails, wire, and other items which may cause harm to the tree chipper or operator. WASTE NOT will not accept stumps, wreaths, yard waste, cut up trees, branches, bushes, etc.
WASTE NOT staff encourages all residents to take advantage of this program and to utilize our other recycling services. For more information, please contact Rebecca Sawyer at 775 832 1284.
