Trash Containment & Bear Awareness Program

Properly Containing Your Trash

We are fortunate to live, work, and/or recreate in a national treasure. To protect our wildlife and keep our community clean, all residents, visitors, and businesses are required to keep their waste properly contained.

Here are a few tips for proper trash containment:
– Place your trash at the curb, on the morning of your trash day (after 5 am) only
– Remove any trash from the curb by 6 pm
– Do not allow wildlife and other pests to attack trash or waste
– Place your trash in proper receptacles
– Spray your cans with ammonia or Pine Sol
– NEVER feed wildlife
– Keep your pet food inside
– Keep all commercial bins closed (at all times)
– Lock residential and commercial bins that are retrofitted for wildlife
– Take waste from weekend visits to the Waste Management transfer station prior to leaving Incline (775) 831-2971.

All owners are responsible for properly managing waste on their property. Owners who do not properly contain waste or place trash out at the curb prior to trash day are subject of fines up to $1,000 per incident and staff fees.  Trash Ordinance #1

CARE ABOUT THE TAHOE BEAR ISSUE?

You can help – It’s Easy to make a Difference! Just “Dare to Care!”
Be a part of the Neighborhood Bear Watch Program!

The Neighborhood Bear Watch Program is the missing component in the existing system that can significantly reduce the flow of tasty trash and other sources of food so that the bears return to feeding in the forest.  It will also help facilitate a quicker response to curious bears before they cause damage to property and get themselves into trouble.  The program relies on people like you to simply keep an eye on their neighborhoods, and then if you see any bear activity, trash issues, or other bear related concerns, you simply make a phone call.

They then follow-up and take the appropriate action.  We will provide you with simple instructions that outline what number to call in your area, as well as other options to consider.  You then get to choose how best to handle your particular situation in the way that feels right to you.  That’s it!  All it takes is a phone call!  It’s that easy for you to make a real difference in this increasingly important issue!  So “Dare to Care!” and Call 530-579-PAWS (7297) or email info@neighborhoodbearwatch.org for more information!

Bear Awareness Program

Incline Village General Improvement District and Washoe County implemented the Bear Awareness Program (BAP). The program consists on education, ordinance and a lead by example/incentive component. For more information on the Bear Awareness Program please click here for the flyer, click here for the BAP brochure or click here to check out bear proof containers.

Due to tremendous community response, the “Bear Box” (Garbage Can Enclosure) Incentive program is sold out for 2007-2008.  Pending Board approval, funding may resume in July 2008 for this program. Please check back for any updates.

If you spot a problem bear in your area, please contact the Nevada Division of Wildlife at (775) 688-1331.
